First and foremost, you want to choose blinds, shades, curtains and accessories that are attractive and that fit well within your decor. If you’re working with a room that’s already been decorated, take a look around and notice the colors that stand out for you. Choose similar colors for your blinds, shades, curtains and accessories that will compliment the style that’s already there.

If your room has not yet been decorated or doesn’t seem to quite come together, consider choosing blinds, shades, curtains and accessories that will stand out and serve as a focal point. You might choose bold colors or patterns, or use several panels and shades together to create interest. You don’t want your windows to be so decorated that they overwhelm the rest of the room, but windows can serve as excellent focal points – especially if you have a view you want to accentuate.

While you do want to choose blinds, shades, curtains and accessories that you like, remember that they’re also serving a purpose. One function is to provide privacy. However, this doesn’t mean that you necessarily have to choose thick, heavy fabrics. If you want the look of a softer option like lace, but still want to have privacy, choose blinds, shades, curtains and other treatments that incorporate several elements. You can have lace covering your windows, but hang heavier panels on the sides that you’ll be able to tie back when not in use and release when you need some privacy.

Blinds, shades, curtains and window treatments can also act as insulators. If you live in a colder region, using heavy fabrics like velvet can help to trap heat in your home and prevent the cold air from getting in. During cooler months, you can use lightweight fabrics linen and lace to provide the air flow you want, while still providing the privacy and function that you need. The best blinds, shades, curtains and accessories are going to be ones that are both functional and beautiful to look at.
